Emo
I’m getting very, very pissed off about this term lately.
The term “emo” has been around for a long time. It’s just a shortened version of “emotional”, which is really a universal term. Emotional doesn’t necessarily have to apply to sadness and crying - isn’t happiness an emotion? Isn’t puzzlement an emotion? Yes? Then the term “emotional” can be used alongside those as well as sadness.
But now emo has become almost an insult, a derogatory term, associated with sadness or feeling down. You know, god forbid something happens to me at school and I start crying, because if I do, I’m a “stupid emo kid”. God forbid if I wear a black outfit, because that’s associated with “emo”. If I get a scratch on my arm, I’m a “stupid emo cutter”. It’s ridiculous stereotyping - with a word that is being overused and misused so much these days.
Everybody feels emotion. Everybody feels SOMETHING, whether it be apathy, sorrow, or joy, and therefore everybody is emotional. Everybody is “emo”, not just people who cut or wear black or shed a tear every so often. I’m pissed off.
The other day I was in a panic after school - I was worrying about my future like everybody does sometimes and started crying - and this random girl came up to me and said “Go cut, emo kid”. It was more angering to me than it was anything else. Oh, wow, I’m having thoughts that everybody has occasionally and they’re making me tear up, therefore I MUST be “emo” and cut.
It’s ridiculous. Emo is an overused, misused term that is used to describe everything from music to clothes to people to thoughts. It’s sad that it has the meaning that it does now, because in actuality, it’s just an abbreviation of “emotional”.

My friends and I joke around with each other whenever we get scratches on our wrists about being emo, but we don’t use it as an insult to people we don’t even know. Half of the time people don’t even associate it with black clothes, being sad, or cutting. They just use it as an insult - you get into a fight with someone (well, I do, because I’m loud and I tell people what I think) and they call you “emo” for no reason. And I totally agree that it’s wrong to use it as an insult, especially when somebody is just having feelings. Which we all do, when you think about, unless you’re a robot like this one kid in my class. I swear, every one of his expressions are exactly the same. But, that aside, everybody has feelings, and so anybody who uses “emo” as an insult is a hypocrite.

One of my friends drew the — ((dash dash dash)) line across her wrist and drew a tiny pair of scissors nest to it. You know, like you see for the “Cut Here” things on forms? Now it’s an inside joke.
That was a random comment on a sad and not-funny article, but I thought the www should know.

Although Emo is often used as a short version of ‘Emotional’, I’m afraid it is not.
Emo was a short term used to describe Emotional Punk or Emocore.
Now it describes a certain type of music/clothing.
Most self-proclaimed ‘Emos’ are just poseurs.
Just, for the record, Emo can refer to:
- A style of rock music which describes several independent variations of music with common stylistic roots.
- A wide range of fashion styles and attitudes somewhat affiliated with emo music.
- Someone who fits a particular emo stereotype or category or someone who is overly-emotional.
I’ve been ‘catalogued’ as Emo because of the way I dress or the music I listen to. Yet, I do not behave like these preteens who claim to be something they are not.
Emo is a very controversial term and I doubt if it can even be defined.

I agree with Nano.
Most ‘emo’ people are just poseurs. And mostly are for the way they dress or have their hair done.
As for the article written, many people are just hypocrit about the term in some certain areas. Thankfully they are few of them who I consider unaducated people.
I also make fun o the term with my friends althogh I want to stop cause of respect of people who are really emotional and stuff
