Homosexuality and Bisexuality
A very overdone subject, but one I want to voice my opinion on all the same.
Many argue that homosexuality is wrong because The Bible says it is. But… The Bible was not written by God. The Bible is a compilation of what various people back in the day thought God wanted. It’s not God’s word there, which is why it contradicts itself. There are several areas where it says that God is accepting of every single person, regardless of sexual orientation, race, past, or belief. Yet there are also several areas where it states that God feels that homosexuality is an abomination. In the words of Orwell, way to “doublethink” (God, I love 1984). Or rather, way to have a bunch of different people write down what they think is right and wrong and proclaim it as God’s word.
And, for the record, The Bible also states that you can’t wear clothes made with certain fabrics, eat certain foods, and lots of other ridiculous things that we do every day.
Answer me this: If God didn’t want homosexuals, why did He create them? If God didn’t want people to be with whomever they wish, why did He allow it in the first place? What if your best friend since toddlerhood told you tomorrow that she is a lesbian or is bi? Would you stop talking to her and end the friendship that you’ve had for years?
Homosexuality is natural. It’s not by choice, and you can’t change it. You can’t change people’s opinions on things like war or George Bush or Communism, so what makes everybody think that they can change people’s sexual orientation? Again, you are not homosexual or bisexual by choice. What, do you just wake up in the morning one day and say, “Oh, I’ve decided to be gay”? Can you help falling in love? Can you help having feelings for someone? No? Then you can’t help WHO you fall in love with or WHO you have feelings for, regardless of gender.
It’s different in each individual country, but in the U.S. at least, the Bill of Rights clearly states in Amendment 9 that each person’s individual rights are protected by the Constitution. These rights include the way you do your hair, the way you dress, your opinion on the latest movie, your opinion on the government, and your sexual orientation. And yes, this does protect your right to think what you will about homosexuality (actually, that also applie to Freedom of Speech). However, there is a difference between freedom of speech and prejudice against something that can’t be helped.
For people who don’t hang out with gay/lesbian/bi people because you’re afraid that they’ll get a crush on you - what about hanging out with people of the opposite sex? What if THEY get a crush on you? Are you going to be afraid of them as well? If you’re afraid of gays crushing on you, then you also need to be worried about straight people crushing on you. In other words, beggars can’t be choosers. Friendship is a valuable thing. You can be friends with anybody - gay, lesbian, bi, straight, heck, even asexual - and their sexual orientation won’t make them any less dear.
A few months ago, the U.S. Military tried to get homosexuality listed as an actual mental disorder. At the moment, the Military relies on a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy when it comes to homosexuality - the Military can’t ask you about your sexual orientation, but if you publicly announce being gay, they’ll kick you out. But people with mental disorders aren’t allowed in the Military either. With this proposal, homosexuality would be right up there with ADHD and bipolar disorder - and it would be required of potential militiants to state before joining whether or not they are homosexual. This I found to be ridiculous. It’s trying to force one’s beliefs (in this case, likely religious - as many Christians believe homosexuality to be a sin) on another - which is NOT what the U.S. is about in any way, shape or form.
There’s nothing wrong with homosexuality. Homosexuality and bisexuality have been around for an extremely long time. They’re perfectly normal, and even though I am neither lesbian or bi, I support it. Cheesy as it sounds, love is love, regardless of any characteristics, mindsets, opinions, or orientations a person may have.

Wowww. I totally think that people deserve to marry who they want. And HOW is it a mental disorder? Like you wake up one morning and go, “Wow, I’m going to be gay when I grow up!” I know a lot of people are extremely against this, but come on. Love is love. And your point re/ hanging out with a guy (if you’re a girl) is totally right. Just because you’re a girl doesn’t mean your friend who’s a guy will like you.
I could say so much more, but I don’t want everyone to hate me. So I’ll shut up now.

I so totally, absolutely and deeply agree with you, lol. As Clem said, love is love and everyone’s always going on about people being able to to & feel whatever they want, so why not male/male relationships, or female/female ones, or whatever?
One of my best friends is going to marry his partner next month, and I think this is awesome and right and good and whatnot, but on the other hand, I’m shocked to see how his stepmother (…from hell) is suddenly emphasizing he’s only her STEPson and she didn’t raise him, just endures his behaviour because she loves his father, that kind of stuff. It’s discriminating, she performs it like an art or something.
And homosexuality listed as a mental disease, did they really try to do that? I’ve heard that Australian soldiers tried to send homosexual appliants away, because they were - imagine that - afraid that those men’ll catch them choking the snake (y’know xD) and rape them or something, that’s bad, but mental disease is, like, the height of badness..whoa.
Sorry for the ranting, and yes, the subject is very overdone by now, but after reading your article, I somehow couldn’t resist xD

Okay, because I’m a Christian, I think I’ll defend the point of view a little. Not to sound judgemental, just so y’all can here a bit explained. If nothing else, take the time to laugh at me.
The Bible is divided up into two sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament. “Testament” is sometimes replaced with “Covenant,” a synonym for “promise.” During the Old Covenant times, there were rules about food and clothes, etc. to set the Jewish nation apart from the rest. In example of clothes, they wore blue tassles to show that they were in favor of God. ((Think the Biblical version of political bumper stickers.)) They had to make sacrifices and keep these certain customs in order to get rid of their sins… theirs wrongs against God that will keep them away from Him. ((God is the only perfect being, so any wrong done against him, no matter how small, creates a canyon in the You/God relationship.))
Then came the New Testament. When this comes, it fulfills the promises is the Old Testament, making them null. All of the things we need to obey ((don’t lie, don’t murder, etc.)) are repeated in the New Testament, too. This is where Jesus comes in, God’s plan to save the world. You see, he created the world so he would have something to show his infinite love and mercy to. Jesus lived on the earth for 33 years and was a completely and utterly sinless man. If you read the Bible ((which I suggest you do, whether you are religious or not- Jesus was a pretty cool guy)) you will see the kinds of people Jesus hung out with… tax collectors ((whom were known in the time for cheating)), prostitutes, lepers… but not usually the “religious” people. In the Bible, the Jews had this wacked out theory that because they were God’s “Chosen people” they were better than everyone else. Jesus came to show that he cared about everyone, that everyone. He loved us in spite of our sins. That doesn’t mean the sin isn’t there, just that he doesn’t judge you for it. BUT if you have sin ((and we all do)) it makes you imperfect. It separates you from Him. BUT he loves us even though we hurt him, and he sent Jesus so we can have a second chance at living with him and in his way.
It says in the Bible that homosexuality is a sin. But that doesn’t mean WE, US, HUMANS should be the judge of it. Lying is a sin. If you hate homosexuals because they are “sinning against God” YOU are going against his commands to not judge and show love. So many Christian s have the same problem those Jewish leaders did… thinking they’re better. But we’re not. It’s not that Christians don’t sin, it’s that they know a way to set it aside. Homosexuality is not a mental disorder. God puts everything in our lives for a reason, to bring us closer to Him and complete his plan for our lives. He gave us free minds to choose because he wants us to choose him, not just be robots programmed that way. His way IS love, mercy, grace, and he wants everyone to experience the perfectness of his kingdom when we die.
About how the Bible was not written by God- 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” God-breathed… that mean it’s GOD’S word. When it says homosexuality is wrong, it’s correct… It goes against God’s Word in the Bible… but it’s GOD’S job to judge, not ours. We should show them love and befriend them just like any other human being.
I win. Longest comment. Most people wishing to throw eggs at my house.

Thank you for your comment, Mary! I haven’t read the Bible thoroughly - I’m agnostic, and I’ve just skimmed through it - but from what I’ve learned in history about Christianity, the Old Testament was the Jewish holy book, and the New Testament the… Catholic one? Been a long time since that unit.
I don’t want to offend anybody, so I will refrain from talking any more about the Bible not being God’s word… that’s a whole other debate there. But thanks for your comment - it’s obvious you know a lot about the Bible; it shows greatly.

Okay, commenting again. The Old Testament was written by Jewish prophets and kings, and the new testament ((the part about Jesus… the Jews’ Torah is the first five books of the new testament, the ones about Moses and the Ten Commandments)) is written by what we now call Messianic Jews. these are people of the Jewish faith who came to believe in Jesus as their savior. ((that only he could rescue them from hell… he’s the perfect sacrifice, that stuff.)) All are written by either one of Jesus’s disciples, who studied with him while he was alive, or the disciples’ disciples. ((Disciples here means students.))
Yeah. In the Catholic faith there are some “extra” books of the Bible, but I just have a regular one, written by the people who knew Jesus and were influenced by God. One way to think of it… when you write a paper, you say that you wrote it, not the pen. The writers in the Bible were like God’s pens.
Well, there you go.

OOPS! The torah is the first five books of the OLD testament. sorry. Goodness.

Well, that’s what I get for not paying attention during history. Thank you for the lesson - very helpful!

Okay. Mary, you seem like a bit of a…
“About how the Bible was not written by God- 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.†God-breathed… that mean it’s GOD’S word. Yeah that’s all well and good to quote that… but who wrote that? A human!!!!!!!!!!! If there was a God and he was perfect, then they would not create beings that are imperfect in their mind. If you want to argue about “free will”, there’s no such thing.
